VERTICAL VS. HORIZONTAL: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
Vertical doesn’t mean a stand-up (upright) machine, nor does horizontal mean a sit-down (cocktail) machine. “Horizontal” and “vertical” are simply descriptions of the orientation of the machine’s monitor within the cabinet.
For the most part, the game’s action determines whether a vertical or horizontal formatted monitor is used. In vertical games like Pac-Man, Galaga, Donkey Kong and Frogger, the game play is narrower (meaning more top to bottom then it is left to right or right to left). As a result, in each of these classic games, they were originally formatted to be displayed on a vertically mounted monitor.
On the other hand, horizontal games like Defender, Joust, Asteroids, Robotron, Missile Command and fighting type games require the monitor to be mounted horizontally within the cabinet, since the game play is more left to right or right to left.
When deciding on an authentic classic arcade machine, just like you remember from the ‘80s (unlike the computer MAME arcade systems being sold everywhere today), you have to make a choice. That choice is between a vertical or horizontal cabinet, which is simply based on whether you want vertical or horizontal games (to determine whether your favorite games are vertical or horizontal email us a request to see a full game list). Keep in mind only vertical games will play on a vertical mounted monitor machine (standup or sit-down) and only horizontal games will play on a horizontal mounted monitor machine (standup or sit-down).
However, for customers that want to play both vertical and horizontal games, Arcade Classics has the perfect answer for you. Our unique, one of a kind, Ultimate Cocktail Table Arcade Machine authentically plays both vertical and horizontal games on the same machine!
With a simple push of a button, the user can instantly toggle between their favorite vertical and horizontal games. When you want to play vertical games, sit at the shorter (vertical) side of the table. Or when you want to play horizontal games, sit at the wider (horizontal) side of the table. The most important aspect of the Arcade Classics Ultimate Cocktail Table Arcade Machine is that it maintains the integrity of the classics by playing them in their original authentic display format. Our cabinets are compatible (via a Jamma PCB Arcade Game Board) with most of the vertical and horizontal classic games from the '80s.
Important Note on Upright Machines: On an authentic upright/stand-up arcade machine you cannot play both vertical & horizontal games on the same machine. This is because you can only turn the monitor one way within an upright cabinet, either vertical or horizontal. As a result, when people purchase an upright machine the choice is either a vertical or a horizontal upright. Most people opt for a vertical upright since it has more of the most popular games, via JAMMA PCB arcade game boards.

ARCADE MONITOR (CGA) vs COMPUTER MONITORS (VGA/LCD/CRT)
True arcade monitors are built to last decades and display the games the way they were originally programmed. Classic arcade games of the 1980′s were programmed for CGA arcade monitors, not VGA computer monitors. VGA computer monitors (which everyone else is selling today) use formulas that work with pixels to scale the images. They render an image that does not reproduce the game graphics authentically. It’s like playing Pac-Man on your computer. Our monitors were designed by our engineers in the 1980′s, well before VGAs emerged. We are the only company left today that still offers classic arcade machines that will display the graphics just like you remember them. Part of the nostalgia of owning a classic arcade machine is having the games look exactly as they did in their original form.
Our Cocktail Table Arcade Machine™ comes with a New 21″ Authentic 15kz CGA Arcade Monitor. You will not find a 21″ viewable authentic arcade monitor anywhere else. Others today are selling the cheaper 17″ or 19″ VGA LCD/computer monitor with a viewable area that’s 2″ less than stated. VGA monitors simply cannot reproduce the game graphics of the classic games the way you remember them.
Our BRAND NEW 21″ industrial strength commercial grade arcade monitor is designed to run 24/7, for decades.
Yes, the arcade machine cabinet is built with a universal JAMMA connector that makes it compatible with most arcade game circuit boards.
IS THE ARCADE MACHINE FULLY ASSEMBLED AND READY TO PLAY?
Yes, it is “Plug & Play”.
2 PLAYER ACTION
The Cocktail Table Arcade Machine™ for vertical games is built with two control panels, one on each side. Players sit across from each other, and the image on the screen flips to face each player when it’s their turn.
On the other hand, our Cocktail Table Arcade Machine™ for horizontal games is built with an extra wide expanded control panel which allows for side by side – two player action. A unique feature of this unit is that it also allows for two player simultaneous play.
LEFT HANDED PLAY
We have expanded our control panels on our arcade cocktail table™ (for vertical games) to make them larger and span the entire width of the cabinet on each side. This gives players more room, and also provides for more comfortable game play. Control panels are built with a duplicate set of buttons on both the right and left side of the joystick. This enables players to always have a complete set of buttons accessible, regardless of which hand they prefer to shoot with.
There is always an adjacent set of buttons for the hand not using the joystick. This design feature is especially helpful for left handed players. Arcade machines are most commonly built with a joystick on the left, and the shooting buttons on the right. Left handed players usually prefer the opposite. This causes a left handed player to have to crisscross their arms, making game play more cumbersome. We offer the only arcade machines for sale that have the left handed feature, and are also compatible for right handed and ambidextrous gamers.
The Arcade Classics arcade machines have a commercial – sophisticated electronic coin mechanism installed. They work with coins or tokens, and you have complete control over pricing. They can be set for either coin play or free play.
TAKE TOKENS RATHER THAN ACTUAL QUARTERS?
Yes. The coin mechanism installed on each of our arcade machines utilizes a very sophisticated electronic design. It works by comparing incoming coins with a sample coin that is placed in a special compartment behind the coin door. You can use any type of coin or token. If the coin that is inserted in the coin slot matches up with the coin inserted, a credit is given. if the coin or token inserted is not a match, it will be rejected and returned in the coin return slot. We have customers outside the US that use their country’s currency, and even some customers that use nickels. Tokens work just like any other coin.
