Will Your Favorite Classic Make it Into the World Video Game Hall of Fame?
Does a certain classic cabinet or cocktail arcade game hold a special place in your heart? If so, you might be able to share the love for your favorite with museum goers the world over. In Rochester, NY, the Strong National Museum of Play has a new exhibit in store.
Electronic Games to Be Honored
The games set to be displayed at the Rochester museum will include all electronic games: classic arcade games, console games, handheld games, computer games and mobile games. G. Rollie Adams, President and CEO of the Strong Museum, stated “There is no other video game award and recognition program such as this, which focuses solely on individual game titles across platforms and their impact over time and across international borders,” in a February 17 press release.
In order for a game to make the cut, they must meet four different criteria: icon-status, longevity, geographical reach and influence. It is possible for a nominated game to be inducted based on influence alone.
Up until March 31, 2015, worldvideogamehallofame.org is accepting nominations for the first group of inductees. You and all of your friend can nominate any game you would like. The museum will put together a team of board members to review each nomination, and get advice on their final decisions from a worldwide selection of video game experts. The first class of inaugurations will be announced at a June 2015 ceremony.
The Strong’s Dedication to Play
The Strong National Museum of Play is the only museum completely focused on the historical and cultural effects of toys, games and modern entertainment. The World Video Game Hall of Fame will be an addition to the already famed exhibits located at the museum, such as the National Toy Hall of Fame and the International Center for the History of Electronic Games. The Strong is the perfect museum to build the new hall, as they own over 55,000 different electronic games and archived papers on the creation of many well-loved titles. If you’re planning a Northeastern trip this summer, paying a visit to Rochester, NY may be worth your while.
