SK Telecom T1 Becomes “League of Legends” World Champions for the Second Time

The League of Legends Tournament
League of Legends is an online multi-player game published by Riot Games that involves gamers controlling a champion and battling other champions and teams of players. Ultimately, each team must try to destroy the other’s “nexus” – the center of each team’s base. League of Legends is one of the most-played PC games of all time.
Each year, Riot Games organizes regional tournaments in various continents, including Europe, North America and Asia. The top performing teams from each of the Championship Series go to the World Championship.
2015’s team winner, Korean team winner SK Telecom T1 became the first team to win the major tournament twice, taking home the grand prize of $2.3 million. They defeated another Koren team, KOO Tigers, by 3 to 1 in Berlin, Germany.
The Growing Attraction of eSports
The draw of League of Legends is only one example of many video game tournaments that are beginning to draw interest from investors due to expert prediction of incredibly fast growth in the industry in coming years. eSports, which is a term used to describe the professional gaming industry and tournaments such as this, is expected to grow from a $194 million industry to a $465 million industry by 2017. Experts suggest that within two years, the industry could produce at least $1 billion in revenue.
