Sega Bringing Classic Arcade Games to Nintendo 3DS in 2015

Are you itching to play one more round of After Burner 2, but you have not saved up enough cash to buy a classic arcade machine or cocktail table arcade game yet? If you own a Nintendo 3DS you are in luck. Sega has just announced that they will be bringing back multiple classic games to 3DS format in Japan this year. The games are expected to arrive to European and North American audiences sometime in early 2015.

A New Way to Experience Classic Sega Games

Instead of popping a couple of quarters into a well-used arcade cabinet, you get to relax on your couch and switch on your 3DS while you play Fantasy Zone, Fantasy Zone 2, OutRun and Thunder Blade. These games are a welcome addition to the classic games Sega released in November 2013 for 3DS: Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Ecco the Dolphin, and Shinobi 3.

John Cheng, Sega America’s COO and President, commented on the games’ authenticity factor. “These games were completely re-built to offer a robust 3D experience that offers more modern gameplay while still keeping true to the original,” he stated in a November 3 press release. “These are the best versions of some of our most unforgettable games and playing them is just like sitting in an arcade machine.”

While the format is different, the experience is designed to be the same, or as close to the same as possible. It might be almost impossible for a handheld system to compete with the original arcade method of game-playing, but Sega is going to try to compete anyway, and that is perfectly fine for many excited consumers.

Sega plans on releasing After Burner 2 as the first in their series of upcoming releases. Each month, a new game installment will be added to eShop for Nintendo 3DS. The games are retailing at $5.99 each.
