Dino Dini’s Kick Off Revival Coming in 2016

Back in the late 1980s, it wasn’t just the Pac-Man cocktail arcade table that caught your attention, not if you were an avid gamer. You also enjoyed many other classics like Space Invaders, Asteroids, Kick Off and more.

Wait a minute – Kick Off?

In case you forgot about this classic soccer video game, it’s time to refresh your memory. Kick Off was released in 1989 for the Amiga and Atari ST, published by Anco. Dino Dini, a renowned developer, conceived and programmed the title. The game became an instant hit due to its style of play. Instead of having the soccer ball controlled easily by a famous player, it took skill and precision to handle the ball and score goals. It was especially popular in Europe and crossed over to many other gaming platforms, including NES and Genesis, as well as winning several awards.

Dini’s New Take on His Old Classic

Dini recently announced he will be reimagining the original game, titling it Dino Dini’s Kick-Off Revival, and will release it for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in 2016 – no definite dates as of yet. In fact, Sony gifted Dini with a free PS Vita development kit. Sony and all classic gaming fans know that this could be huge. Kick-Off is one of the top revered soccer video games and Dini’s modern technological updates will most likely only make the game more fun and more addicting to master.

Dini states that the new game will be designed in 3D and will allow players to move around more fluidly, as opposed to the old game where players could only use the eight directional buttons.

“It's not going to be about you controlling a famous character on the football field with TV cameras and all the rest of it,” Dini said. “For me, what's important is to capture the sport so that you will have the ability to express yourself on the field with how you control the ball. You'll train and practice. You'll need to have to have the mental composure so that you can pull it all together in that moment that counts so you can score a goal right when you need it.”

It’s fitting that the announcement comes in the 25th anniversary year of Dini’s release of Kick Off 2. Each year, fans of this version of the title gather for a tournament, and 2015’s round will take place in Dublin, Ireland. There is no doubt they and the rest of the Kick Off faithful have much to be excited for in the coming year.
