“Contra” Makes a Comeback
Perhaps a lesser known classic cocktail arcade machine drew your interest when you were younger: Contra. Now, the title is being re-released in mobile app phone for Chinese residents. However, there’s a high likelihood the app could also be made available in the U.S. app stores for Android and iOS if it proves to be a success.
Contra was originally published by Konami in 1987 and is categorized as a “run and gun” action arcade game. The game was also ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System and playable on home computers later in the 80s. Due to its popularity, the title had multiple sequels on many different platforms.
Set far in the future, in the year 2633, two commandos must make an effort to crush the Red Falcon Organization which is intent on ruining the world. While the players start with a rifle, they can upgrade to various guns in the side scrolling action game where they face different levels, including jungles and waterfalls, to reach the enemy and destroy the base.
What Made Contra Special?
Contra stood out from the vast crowd of titles released around the same time period because of its two-player simultaneous game play. The arcade machine didn’t just prove to be a major hit in arcades alone – many gamers enjoyed the title on the NES system as well as its subsequent sequels.
The Revised Mobile App
While Konami already released Contra: Evolution for Chinese mobile devices, the newest version is said to portray many features of the original arcade game. The title will be free to play, with in-app purchases optional. The release date has not yet been announced, but Konami and the Chinese technology firm Tencent, which has partnered with the company in this venture, anticipates a high amount of downloads due to the consistent fan base the game has always commanded among Chinese audiences.
