Space Invaders Extreme Coming to Steam
If you’re a fan of retro games you probably already know this is a big anniversary year for Space Invaders, the iconic arcade game. That's right, one of the most famous upright and cocktail table arcade game titles ever made is almost 40 years old. To mark the anniversary, the original developer of Space Invaders, Taito, is releasing the brilliant game Space Invaders Extreme on Steam.
If you’re thinking Space Invaders Extreme is familiar, you would be right. It was first released by Taito back in 2008 to mark the 30th anniversary of the classic space shooter. That release 10 years ago, however, was only on the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable. This release on Steam will bring the game – and the classic franchise – to a much wider audience.
Space Invaders Extreme will be available on Steam in February.
What to Expect from Space Invaders Extreme
If you haven't played Space Invaders Extreme before but were a fan of the original game, you are in for a treat. It was a huge hit in 2008 because it achieved something that most reincarnations of retro video games find difficult – maintaining the charm and excitement of the original game while bringing it up-to-date to make it relevant to modern and more experienced gamers.
Taito achieved this by keeping the design and basic gameplay very similar to the original Space Invaders. It is a 2D screen and you control the laser shooting at the bottom. Aliens attack from above and you lose a life when you're hit by one of the aliens or one of their lasers, or if one of the aliens makes it to the bottom of the screen.
It's the way the aliens attack that makes Space Invaders Extreme supercharged, though. They come at you in formations you won’t have seen in the original version of the game. The variations of attack keep you on your toes, not knowing what to expect next. This could be a renegade alien breaking from the main formation for a solo attack, an alien duplicating, or an alien going on a kamikaze run after a hit by one of your lasers.
It sounds fun, doesn’t it? Look out for it on Steam next month.
