Play Barnstorming and Other Atari Classics in Call of Duty

Given the popularity of classic arcade games at the moment, companies are bringing out lots of new products to get a share of the audience. This includes relaunches of classic consoles as well as new upright and tabletop arcade game machines. The Call of Duty game franchise is doing something completely different, however – classic games within a game.

Call of Duty is the thoroughly modern and hugely popular console and PC game. The fact it is modern hasn't stopped the developers from honouring game industry trailblazers, though. Within the latest installment of the Call of Duty series, Call of Duty: WWII, you can play classic Atari 2600 games. Call of Duty: WWII went on sale this month.

It is a full-on first-person shooter set in the European theatre of WWII. Within the game, there is a headquarters where you can go to relax until you head back out into the war zone for matches. There is an R&R tent in the headquarters and there you will find 15 different Activision classics to play.

Early 80s Classic Games in WWII?

Okay, you have to ignore the fact the real-life Atari versions of these games didn't exist until over 35 years after the end of WWII. It is still a cool feature to have in this latest version of Call of Duty, though.

The games include Barnstorming, where you dodge windmills and other objects while flying a biplane. There is also Pitfall II, the 1984 sequel to Pitfall where you control the explorer Harry as he heads underground. The oddly addictive Kaboom! is in there too where you catch bombs thrown by the Mad Bomber in buckets to stop them exploding.

You can also fight demons to get off the ice planet Krybor in Demon Attack or fly a helicopter to protect trucks travelling through the desert in Chopper Command.
