Huge Range of 80s Characters to Appear in the New Super Smash Bros. Game

A new Super Smash Bros. game is coming out on the Switch later in the year, and it promises to have just about every main character that Nintendo has produced. This includes Pac-Man from the original and iconic Pac Man arcade machine as well as Donkey Kong, Mega Man, and more.

Nintendo is calling the latest version of this classic series Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It will be available on December 7.

Super Smash Bros. first came out in 1999 with only 12 characters. The games series has gone on to become one of the company's most popular franchises – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be the fifth in the series.

Here’s the official trailer:

1980s Characters Available in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate span multiple decades, from the 1980s to the present day. This blog, however, is most interested in those characters we remember from the arcade and home console-playing days of our youth. In other words, characters from the 1980s.

If you are a fan of this era of gaming, you won’t be disappointed with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Here’s who makes the roster:

• Richter and Simon from Castlevania

• Donkey Kong plus characters introduced to the Donkey Franchise in later years including Diddy Kong and King J. Rool who both first appeared in 1994

• Duck Hunt

• Mr. Game & Watch

• R.O.B. from Gyromite and Stack-Up

• The Ice Climbers from Ice Climber

• Pit and Palutena from Kid Icarus as well as Dark Pit who was introduced in the 2012 game Kid Icarus: Uprising

• Mega Man

• Snake from Metal Gear

• Samus and Ridley from Metroid as well as some later characters

• Pac-Man

• Little Mac from Punch-Out!!

• Ryu from Street Fighter

• A range of Mario characters including Mario himself as well as Luigi, Daisy, Peach, Yoshi, and Bowser

You won’t be able to play using all the characters above immediately as you will need to unlock some of them. Still, this is most packed Super Smash Bros. game to date, and it promises many hours of retro-character gaming fun.

That said, you can also play the original game that includes many of the characters above if you owned your own full-size arcade machine. Check out our collection and the range of pre-loaded games today.
