Gamescom 2016’s Best Game Winner: Nintendo Takes Home the Prize

If you happened to take a break from playing your multi game arcade machine to travel to Germany this month, you probably already know which new video game title took home the top prize from Gamescom 2016. For everyone else, get ready for a much-anticipated release in 2017. Nintendo’s new Zelda installment, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, has received widespread critical acclaim, including taking home the “Best of Gamescom” prize.

Gamescom: The Largest Video Game Fair Worldwide

Gamescom is a video game trade fair that is held every year in Cologne, Germany at the Koelnmesse, an exhibition center. It began in 2009 and attendance has only grown since. In 2015, 345,000 people visited, 6,000 journalists covered the event and 700 exhibitors from 88 different countries brought games and gaming paraphernalia for public display. This year, Gamescom was held from August 18 to August 21.

At each event, Gamescom issues prize to the top recent or upcoming games, and this year Nintendo came out on top, taking home the best of prize as well as the best console game for Nintendo Wii U prize. Some of the other top performers included For Honor by Ubisoft for the best PC game and best PlayStation 4 console game, Sea of Thieves by Microsoft for the best Xbox console game and Battlefield 1 by Electronic Arts for best action game.

Nintendo’s Latest Zelda Installment

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild won’t be released until 2017, with the game first announced in 2013 and the release date initially set for 2015 before the date was continually delayed. Since the game’s reveal, critics and gamers alike are elated at the prospect of a return to some of the original features of the first Zelda. For example, the game features an open world concept that places the gamers into the world with very little guidance, forcing them to explore along the way.

The game will be released for Nintendo Wii U and the new console, the NX simultaneously. So while no set release date has yet been announced, it could coincide with the NX’s release, which rumors have set for early March.

2017 is going to be an exciting year for Nintendo fans everywhere.
