Video Game Sales Expected to Reach $91 Billion in 2016

Did the creator of the first custom arcade machines ever envision this? Sales projections show that revenues are reaching unprecedented levels, bringing in an incredible $91 billion on a global scale. While this number could potentially rise after holiday sales are analyzed, the initial projections are good news for video game publishers.

What’s Driving the Sales?

The main product that’s driving the high sales numbers is mobile games. Out of all sales, mobile purchases made up $41 billion. Part of this is due mainly to the “Pokémon Go” craze that rocked the world. Also, “Clash Royale” was a major player. But overall, “Monster Strike” brought in $1.3 billion in revenue, making it the highest performing mobile game of all.

Budding Profit Possibilities

No, virtual reality hasn’t taken the market by storm, and this is both a wake-up call and a reminder to video game publishers: consumers want quality content. The simple act of playing a virtual reality game isn’t good enough – consumers want engaging, in-depth storylines and challenging game play to go along with the experience. Even though virtual reality sales procured $2.7 billion, companies will be focusing on expanding this platform for major growth in 2017.

Also, e-sports are expected to generate significant revenue in 2017. While this category of gaming sales brought in a respectable $892 million in revenue, a 19 percent increase over 2015, publishers and investors alike will be exploring ways to increase this return in 2017.
